The Reptiliad Legions

Back to Age of the Sword

RAFM miniatures is one of the old guard of the wargaming world, and their Reptiliad line has been marching across gaming tables since the days when Games Workshop was a minor little boardgame company. Originally a barbarous band of green-skinned spearchuckers, enough years on the rack next to the historical section allowed them to master shield, pilum, and lorica segmentata. The result is a force to dominate swamplands across the world.

The legionnaires' armor is bronze rather than steel (which would rust in short order amidst their usual surroundings), and they have modified the pilum into a forked weapon like a snake-hunter's implement. The war turtle is still the centerpiece of an assault force; unfortunately, it is no longer even part of RAFM's line. The turtles shown are plastic models purchased at Toys-R-Us, with wood-and-cardboard howdahs sized to fit de-based Reptiliad soldiers.

All painting and modeling on this army was done by myself. The trees shown are an assortment of model railroad scenery. The green rock huts were purchased pre-painted at PetSmart, where they were stocked as decorations for lizard terrariums.

Praetor Kassst, Druunu Farseer, Standard, Drummers, and Acolytes

Centurions

Centuria Poleaxe

Led by pilus prior (second in command to praetor)

Centuria Pilum Primus

Centuria Pilum Secundus

Centuria Gladius

War Turtles

The two large turtles were modeled as described above. The juvenile turtle and crew were cast by RAFM.

War Dragons

Lack of cavalry is a reptiliad weakness. Flightless war dragons replicate the heavy impact power of horsemen, if not their maneuverability.

Rattlers

Ballistae, crewlizards, and princeps prior (third in command to praetor)
